Help RADAR – Give Local WP

unnamedYou saved the fields, you saved the Tigers, now it’s time for you to give your support to RADAR.  Our final year of federal funding will come to an end this September.  We need to ensure that the downward trends in teen substance use over the past decade stay strong and continue to move in the right direction.  You can help us do that with a contribution to RADAR through United Way’s second annual Give Local to Westchester and Putnam campaign, which begins in just a few days.  Here is our best pitch:
Our community has made great strides in recent years. Data from our most recent survey shows that:
  • Teen perception of parental disapproval
for alcohol use has increased 25% at MHS
over the last 4 research cycles, 2006-2014.
  • Parental attitudes favorable toward the use of alcohol and drugs have dropped 20% in the same time period.
  • So, not surprisingly, teen use numbers for alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and prescription drugs in our community have all decreased in significant measures since 2006.
  • Alcohol use by 8th graders is at its lowest level ever at HMX.
  • Latest data shows a 35% decrease in reported binge drinking at the high school.

    BUT

  • Alcohol & marijuana use rates among MHS students continue to exceed those reported county- and nationwide.
  • Nearly three quarters of our high school seniors report using alcohol in the past 30 days.
  • Almost 30% of our high schoolers report binge drinking in the past 30 days.
